Why We Give

4 Reasons Why We Give and Tithe

Scripture reveals to us that in tithing and giving, God is not just asking something from us, but He is also doing something for us by developing character and blessing us as we express a generous heart.  Here are some examples:

  1. The principle of the tithe (giving God the first 10% of our income and trusting Him to provide the rest of what we need) started as a command for God’s people in the Old Testament with a promised blessing. The people’s obedience led to the blessings of God. In the New Testament, Jesus continued this instruction and principle.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”  Malachi 3:10 (see also Leviticus 27:30)

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. Mat. 23:23

  1. Giving is a tangible way to see God providing on a regular basis when we put Him first.

“give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38

  1. Giving generously and sacrificially keeps us focused on God and what is important and eternal in life. It teaches us contentment.

But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and[a] we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 1 Tim. 6:6-10

  1. Giving is a cheerful expression of gratitude and trust in Gods ability to bless and provide.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

You share in the “Great Commission” (Matthew 28:18-20) when you resource God’s work. God promises He will take care of us when we give!  Sharon and I have found God to be faithful in providing according to His promises in 35 years of marriage.  He will take care of you too, and it will strengthen your faith! – Pastor Rick Gunn
